How To Trick Your Picky Eater Into Trying New Foods

As you might already know, dealing with a picky eater can be tough and downright frustrating. The irony is, I’m a picky eater myself.

As you might already know, dealing with a picky eater can be tough and downright frustrating. 

The irony is, I’m a picky eater myself. So, you might imagine that trying to convince my son to eat foods that I don’t even like can be a little tricky.

However, it’s important to me that he has better eating habits than I did coming up. Besides, we’ve wasted a ton of food (& money) trying to get Judah to try different types of foods. 

So how exactly can we get our little ones to enjoy eating foods that are actually good for them?

We decided to try using the Chomp! folding plate to see if we could ‘trick’ him into eating healthier foods while simultaneously making my our lives easier.

The Chomp! folding plate was created by a hard working mama who was on a mission to make mealtime easier. It’s a full size plate that folds into a cute little container so that you can store it in the fridge and even take it on the go!

The Chomp! is also made of BPA free plastic and is both microwave and dishwasher safe. 

To our surprise, the Chomp! was a huge hit with Judah! He loved opening and closing the lid and we loved that we were able to store his snacks in it when we were out and about. 

But would it stand up to the test at home during meal time?

Resisting The Urge To Make A Seperate Meal

These days Judah is extremely vocal when he doesn’t like certain foods and as a result, a lot of food ends up uneaten or worse – on the floor.

Most nights, for the sake of my sanity, I’d bite the bullet and make him something different than what we were eating. While it’s been extremely tempting to make him something different this time around, I know that it only encourages his eating habits. 

Trust me, I love my child and I want him to eat but I can’t let him eat puffs and french fries all day.

Although he did have his usual ‘fit’, the great thing about the Chomp! folding plate was that when he decided that he didn’t want to eat anymore, I was able to simply fold it up and pop it in the fridge until he got hungry again.

Patience Is Virtue For A Reason

I’ll never forget the days where I had to sit at the table until I finished all of my food. I sat there for who knows how long, and to this day, I still hate spinach.  

I think a better option is to let your kids leave the table when they’re finished eating, but to not offer anything else in return.

In other words, don’t force them to eat, but don’t let them eat anything else until they eat their dinner. Eventually, they’ll realize that in order to have full bellies, they need to eat their broccoli. 

That being said, sometimes we simply have to be patient.

Serve the food often, and wait for your little one to try it on their own. It may not seem like it now, but eventually they’ll keep seeing the same foods on their plate and eventually get curious enough to try it. 

One of my new favorite things to do is fill the Chomp! with four different types of foods: two foods that I know he likes and two foods that he usually tosses on the floor.

Chomp! Without The Divider

Here we have chicken nuggets, broccoli, wheat toast, and strawberry applesauce. Each compartment in the chomp is equivalent to 3/4 cups so you can fit a pretty nice amount inside.

The Chomp! also comes with a tiny divider that you can place inside to be sure that the food doesn’t touch when you close it. I simply put the divider in place while he ate one side and once he finished, I offered him the other side. 

This actually proved to work really well since he thought he was getting something new each time I rotated the plate.

I love this little divider. I was nervous about putting the applesauce in the top of the Chomp! but to my surprise there weren’t any leaks! I’d still recommend putting any liquids in the bottom half of the Chomp! though –
just to be on the safe side.

So Did It Work?

I’ll be honest, there were times where Judah flung the entire plate on the floor, or even closed it up himself, but I can say that I’ve definitely seen a difference in his enthusiasm to try different types of foods(especially by rotating the different foods out).

Plus, we’ve saved a TON on food this week and found that we were able to make food stretch a little bit longer since we were able to save all of the food that he didn’t finish in the Chomp! once he was done (which meant fewer dishes for me to wash!).

I’d recommend the Chomp! to any mama out there that’s struggling with meal time and is tired of wasting food and money! 

That said, I’m sure the Chomp! will be a staple in our family for years to come!

  4. Those are super cute! I think my daughter might like them. I would just be nervous of her throwing it because she has a tendency to throw plates and bowls. Recently, I have just been putting her food directly on her tray. Those would be nice though because I could just fold the plate up and pop it in the fridge. I might have to try it out!

    1. Yes! I love that you can just toss them in the fridge!! Judah actually closed and tossed the entire thing once but now I guess he understands it’s for food and he doesn’t throw it anymore. He still throws cups though- still working on that haha

  5. OMG this is the cutest plate ever! LOL my boys are obsessed with sharks for some reason, but I think the gator would even work. You have such a cutie pie 🙂 btw
