It’s a new year and you know what that means: New Year’s Resolutions! Check out the 4 New Year’s Resolutions that every mom should make.
With a new year comes the good ole New Year’s resolutions.
There’s even a trend now where instead of creating a list of resolutions, people are choosing a word or phrase to be their ‘theme’ for the year.
While I love this idea, I’m still an old fashioned ‘New Year’s Resolution’ girl at heart.
I love the idea of being able to take inventory of the year before and make a commitment to bettering myself and adopting new habits for the new year.
That said, as my faithful readers know, I have a soft spot for all my mamas out there.
Especially my Stay-At-Home/Work-At-Home moms.
With so much responsibility, it can be tough to keep all of our plates spinning at once.
So I figured it’d be a great idea to share some of my more personal resolutions that I feel that all my mama’s out there can relate to.
So without further ado, here are 4 New Year’s Resolutions that every mom should make!
Pursue A Passion
Remember the women you used to be BEFORE you got married and had kids?
Well guess what?
She’s still in there and there is absolutely no reason that you can’t pursue your passion now that you have kids.
Music has always been a passion of mine.
I absolutely love singing and have really been wanting to learn another instrument (or two).
But like most moms, I’ve been putting it off.
Saying things like:
“I don’t have time.”
And…
“That ship has sailed. Just focus on being a good wife and mom.”
But guess what, I’m tired of putting myself last.
I’m done acting as if I have no other interests outside of my family and my blog.
I encourage you to revisit the things that you were once passionate about and pursue your passion with me this year!
Be More Present
I know I’m not the only mom out there that could stand to put their phone down more often.
Towards the end of the year last year I started realizing that I was spending way too much time on my phone.
See, for those of you that have an iPhone, you may have noticed that each week it’ll tell you exactly how much time you’ve been spending on your phone.
Well, although more than half of the time spent on my phone is for work/blogging purposes, these stats were a huge eye-opener for me.
Even if you don’t have an iPhone, I’m sure that you can think of a handful of times where you could’ve should’ve put your phone down to enjoy a moment with your family.
For me, it’s gotten to the point where my 2-year old will bring me my phone if he sees it laying around.
Just goes to show how much he associates it with me being on it.
So this year, I plan to be intentional about limiting my screen time and other distractions and I encourage you to do the same.
Let’s spend 2019 being in the moment with our kids and making new memories with our family.
Create A Routine
Okay, so my faithful readers may have already read my morning & evening routines, and wonder what other routine I could possibly need.
Well, while I’ve got my personal routines pretty down pact (minus my fitness routine – working on that this year), I desperately need to figure out a cleaning routine.
While I don’t expect to have a spotless home, especially with two kids under two, I do need to get a handle on things.
This isn’t because I feel like I have to uphold some type of image or anything, but more so because as the keeper of the home, it’s my responsibility to set the tone and feel of my home for my family – as well as anyone who visits.
Besides, who doesn’t feel 10x better when their home is clean?
So it’s my mission this year to create and implement a routine that allows me to maintain a certain level of cleanliness in my home on a regular basis, and as boring as that may sound, I’m pretty doggone excited about it.
While you may not need a cleaning routine per se, I’ve learned that having routines in place make staying home with my boys 10x easier and at the end of the day I feel like I actually got something done.
So whether it’s a cleaning routine, fitness routine, or maintaining a consistent self-care regime, take some time to create a routine for yourself this year.
You won’t regret it!
Give Yourself Grace
With all that you accomplished last year, did you stumble across the formula to becoming the perfect mom?
Yeah, me either.
It’s so easy to beat ourselves up over the things that we feel like we ‘should’ be doing as moms.
Notice I put should in quotations.
Thanks to the lovely world of social media, motherhood has become such a comparison game and unfortunately, this causes many of us to second guess ourselves.
We see someone else’s highlight reel and the next thing you know, we’re being super hard on ourselves and feeling like we aren’t enough.
Well guess what mama?
You ARE enough!
Let’s take a step back this year and give ourselves grace.
Grace for the good times and grace during the struggle.
Each day won’t be picture perfect, but it’ll be a new chance to put our best foot forward as we strive to be who our husbands and children need for us to be.
My Word For 2019…
I hope that you can resonate with my New Year’s Resolutions and that you decide to adopt a few of them as your own.
I’m pretty excited to put them into action and embrace everything that 2019 has to offer.
That said…
Embrace is my word for the year.
While it has a couple of different uses and meanings, the one that speaks to me the most is:
em·brace/əmˈbrās/verb
To accept or support (a belief, theory, or change) willingly and enthusiastically.
Now replace ‘a belief, theory, or change’ with ‘myself‘, and that’s my theme for the year.
This word is what inspired the above list and it’s what I will remind myself of whenever self-doubt and pity try to sneak in.
Do you have a word or theme for 2019?
If so, share it in the comments below, I’d love to hear it!
Happy New Year!

I love this post! I think you nailed it with goals and initiatives for 2019 and I’m probably going to follow suit with this list you’ve created. I like the idea of a word to base your year on. I’m going to have to think about that!
Lovely resolutions you have here.
Pursue a passion YES! and stick to it! Love these ideas, thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed your post. Too many times as moms we put our own dreams on hold for our families. I will keep these resolutions in mind for the new year.
Great post with some awesome ideas for moms. I especially love pursue a passion—I have a guitar that I got for Christmas two years ago and I think I played it for a total of two months. This is great inspiration to do the things that are important to me.
Great post! I love the resolution to Give Yourself Grace….this is something we all need to do. Awesome word, I haven’t jumped on the word wagon but I like the concept.
Hey Shannon!
Yes! Once I got over trying to be the ‘perfect’ mom and wife. I realized that what was most important was that I give myself grace for each day and it really takes the pressure off.
I just jumped on the word wagon this year but so far so good!
Thanks for reading!
These are all great suggestions. I am already working on the routine and pursuing my passion. I think embrace is a wonderful word for the year. I think I will reflect and find a focus word for 2019, its a great idea.
Love, love, love this! Especially your word for the year. My theme this year is abundance, as in abundant living more so than an abundance of any one thing. Than you for the awesome reminders of where to focus our energy this year!
Hey Leah!
I LOVE that you chose abundance as your word for the year – especially in the sense of abundant living! I’m working to cultivate more abundance in my life and for my family as well.
So cheers to embracing an abundant 2019!
It was a wonderfully motivating post!! I am trying to make a cleaning routine too… been working on it for a few days once established will b sharing! My word for this year is “simplify” eveything, we complicate things for ourselves !
Hey Huma!
I LOVE your word for the year! I’ve been brainstorming a bunch of different ways to simplify my life this year too! I can’t wait to read your cleaning routine because, to be honest, I’m still struggling in this area (aka laundry haha).
Thanks for reading!
I love your word of the year! Your post has inspired me to make one up for myself 🙂
So much yes to all of these!! I definitely need to work on limiting phone time too!! And pursuing a passion is SO important for everyone… especially Momma’s! Thanks for a beautiful and inspiring post!
I’m a working mom, who works out of the house right now but will be working from home for a few months coming up. These are really great goals, and I’ll add them to my list and try to remember them.
I truly believe on this, pursue a passion!
I love these resolutions! I I started my blog this year so I do a lot of work on my phone but it was SCARY to see those alerts on my iPhone. I have been trying to stay off my phone as much as possible when my son is awake so I can be present with him. Thank you for sharing this post!
Hey Kristen,
I know right! I was shocked when I saw that I spent 6+ hrs on my phone in any given week. I’m slowly but surely working to change that. We got this mama!
Love these! Especially being present and giving yourself grace. What great advice ❤️
