My Credit Story

Prior to entering college, I didn’t know the first thing about credit – and it showed!

After a few years of frivolous spending my irresponsible habits had finally caught up with me and I was ready to do something about it

Since becoming a stay-at-home mom, I’ve been learning all about how to rebuild my credit – especially since my husband and I are looking to buy our forever home soon!

After a few years of implementing the tips that I’ll be sharing with you below, both my husband and I have seen a significant increase in our credit scores and in our overall quality of life.

So if you’re ready to take control of your credit score, bookmark this page for reference and check out the tips below!

1. Know Where You Stand

Before you can begin to revive your credit score, you have to know where you stand.

So first things first: find out your credit score and get copies of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

I know all of this new information can seem overwhelming, but luckily CreditRepair.com makes it super easy to not only find out your credit score, but they also give each of their members their very own online dashboard, a credit score tracker and analysis, creditor and bureau interactions and credit monitoring!

The sooner that you know your score, the sooner you can confidently move forward on your credit repair journey!

2. Check Your Credit Report For Errors

Now that you are armed with your credit score and report, it’s time to carefully review your report to check for any errors or inaccuracies.

This was one trick that I wish I had learned sooner! Negative and/or inaccurate items on your credit report can really damage your credit score.

Although you may not be able to get every negative item removed, it’s definitely worth disputing inaccuracies with the corresponding credit bureau.

I know that disputing inconsistencies on your credit report may seem a bit daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone!

CreditRepair.com has a dedicated team of credit professionals ready to educate and empower you to work toward your ideal credit score!

3. Pay Your Bills On Time

One of the quickest ways to see a boost in your score, other than eliminating debt, is to commit to paying your bills on time.

Paying bills late or missing deadlines entirely can have a negative impact on your credit score.

So much so, that late (& missed) payments stay on your credit report for 7 years.

That said, try your best to keep a calendar with payment amounts and dates. You could even set up auto payments that come out automatically so that you don’t have to think about it!

4. Create & Stick To A Budget

Speaking of paying your bills on time, the easiest way to hold yourself accountable is to create a budget and stick to it.

Budgets will vary from individual to individual but no matter what your budget looks like, the goal is to know exactly where your money goes as you strive to reach to your financial goals!

Think of your credit score as a reflection of your lifestyle. A good credit score affords you the opportunity to meet (or exceed) your financial AND lifestyle goals.

That said, creating a budget is the perfect way to gain control of your money and spending habits and as a result, gain control of your credit.

5. Start An Emergency Fund

Let’s face it, life happens

Sometimes your car breaks down or your air conditioning suddenly goes out, and now you’re not sure how you’re going to pay for repairs AND pay the rest of your bills this month.

Or maybe there was a medical emergency and the hospital bills are starting to pile up.

Unexpected things come up, and more often than not, these situations can put a significant strain on your finances.

One of the best solutions, and what I believe to be one of the most commonly overlooked financial tools, are emergency funds.

An emergency fund is separate from your typical savings account and is created specifically for unexpected financial setbacks such as the examples above.

Creating our emergency fund was a crucial step in my husband and I’s credit repair journey. Although we haven’t had to use it yet, it feels good to know that we have a ‘safety net’ in case anything unexpected happens.

6. Track & Monitor Your Credit Score

Once you’ve disputed the inaccuracies on your credit report, created a budget, and are building your emergency fund, it’s important to continue to track and monitor your credit score.

Your credit report is constantly being updated each time a creditor reports information (typically every 30 days) to the three major bureau’s. So it’s a good idea to keep an eye on what’s being reported.

Monitoring your credit is also a great way to catch inaccuracies or suspicious activity and file a dispute right then and there!

7. Make It A Lifestyle

The time it takes to revive your credit score will vary from person to person depending on their specific situation.

However, no matter what your starting point is or what your financial goals are, it is possible to take control of your credit.

Once I cultivated a healthy relationship with my credit, I naturally started to make more financially wise decisions in my day to day life.

As a result, I went from solely seeking to improve my credit score to embracing the new lifestyle that comes with rewriting my credit story.
