What Activities Are Best for Family Vacations in the South?

·

Planning a family vacation in the South? I’ve partnered with Great Wolf Lodge to share what you can expect when booking a stay at Great Wolf Lodge Georgia. Great Wolf Lodge is one of our favorite turnkey family resorts, complete with an indoor water park, kid-friendly activities, dining options, and stress-free fun for every age. As always, all opinions are my own.

Sharing is caring!

If you’ve been following along here at The Millennial SAHM, you know I’m always on the hunt for family vacations in the South that don’t require a ton of planning and prep. As a busy mom, between sports schedules, toddler meltdowns, and the sheer logistics of traveling with little ones, the last thing I need is a complicated itinerary. So when we packed up and headed to Great Wolf Lodge Georgia, I had no idea how much I was about to love it, but I knew immediately that we’d be going back.

We visited for the first time when my kids were just 3 years old and 18 months old. Yes, really. Two under three at a water park resort. And honestly? It was one of the best vacations we took at that time! Now that my kids are older, we’re heading back this summer as an End of School Celebration, and I cannot wait to see how different the experience will be.

As we gear up for our visit, I wanted to share more about our experience! Whether you’re planning your very first family getaway or looking for a repeat destination that grows with your kids, here’s everything you need to know about why Great Wolf Lodge is the perfect travel destination for your family!

Is Great Wolf Lodge a Turn-Key Family Vacation?

The short answer: absolutely yes! When I think about what makes a trip truly “turn-key,” I think about how much of the mental load I have to carry. Do I need to research outside restaurants? Book separate entertainment? Coordinate between multiple locations? At Great Wolf Lodge, the answer to all of those is a resounding no.

Everything, and I mean everything, is all under one roof. The water park, dining, the arcade, the activities, and the rooms. At no point do you even have to load the kids back into the car. On our first visit, my youngest was still in the “random nap at 1pm” phase of life, and being able to slip back to the room without disrupting our whole day was genuinely game-changing.

The staff are also trained to work with families. The water park has dedicated areas for the littlest guests, and the rooms are designed with families in mind. And now that my kids are older? I know they’re going to want to do ALL the things. Great Wolf Lodge truly is a destination that gets better as your littles get older. What worked for a barely-walking 18-month-old will be even more amazing for a curious, fearless second grader!

5 Ways to Upgrade a Stay at Great Wolf Lodge

As we plan to celebrate the end of school at  Great Wolf Lodge this summer, I’ve done my research on how to level up the experience and here’s what I’d tell any family planning their trip:

•       Book a themed suite. Don’t get me wrong, the standard rooms are a great accommodation for any family, but the themed suites, the ones with wolf den bunk beds built into the wall will make for such amazing memories someday!. For an End of School Celebration, I’m booking the most magical room I can find. Besides, the kids have worked hard this school year, they deserve it!

•       Add on a private cabana. Great Wolf Lodge offers private cabanas in the water park area, creating a true resort-within-a-resort experience. You get a dedicated space to keep your stuff, shade when you need it, and a little retreat from the action. With two young kids the first time around, I wish we’d had one so for this upcoming trip, it’s already on my list.

•       Explore the dining options beyond the basics. We grabbed quick-service food on our first visit because it was easy with a baby on my hip. But Great Wolf Lodge’s dining options are far more elevated than I initially gave them credit for fresh menus and options that actually feel like a restaurant, not just a resort cafeteria. This time, I look forward to actually sitting down and enjoying a meal.

•       Budget for MagiQuest. More on this below, but seriously, make sure you budget for it. My 3-year-old was barely old enough to grasp it on our first visit, but this time I know my kids are going to be obsessed!

•       Arrive the night before the water park opens. One of the best pieces of advice I could share is to check in the evening. Let the kids explore the lodge, grab dinner, and get a good night’s sleep. That way, when that water park opens in the morning, you’ll be fresh and ready to go and the kids won’t be irritable and tired from traveling.

Where Do I Find Curated Family Vacations So I Don’t Have to Plan Activities?

As a mom who prioritizes family travel, this is a question I get asked often, and my answer is always the same: find a destination that basically does the planning for you.

Great Wolf Lodge is the gold standard for this. From the moment you walk in, there is always something to do, and it’s all organized, safe, and family-friendly. You don’t have to scroll through Yelp reviews or debate which attractions would be a good fit. You’re not wasting time wondering if this restaurant is kid-friendly or if that activity has an age minimum.

On our first trip, I didn’t realize how much mental energy I’d save by simply not having to decide. When my toddler was done with the water park, we wandered over to the activity area. When my baby needed a break, we went back to the room. When we were hungry, we were already in the right place. Great Wolf Lodge has interactive programming, immersive entertainment, and a layout that’s designed to let you flow naturally between dining, activities, and downtime.

How Can I Plan a Fun Staycation with Kids That Everyone Will Enjoy?

Sometimes a “staycation” doesn’t mean staying at home; it can also mean staying somewhere close to home that still feels like a real escape. Great Wolf Lodge fits that description perfectly for so many Southern families.

Here’s how I approach planning a staycation-style trip everyone will actually enjoy:

•       Set the mood before you go. Soon we will tell the kids that we are going on a fun end of school trip but we won’t tell them where. The anticipation is half the fun!

•       Keep the schedule loose. The whole point of a ‘staycation’ is to be able to enjoy a vacation without having a tight itinerary to adhere to. The beauty of Great Wolf Lodge is that the structure is already built and all we have to do is show up and have fun!

•       Don’t skip MagiQuest. MagiQuest is an interactive, role-playing adventure game that kids play throughout the lodge using magic wands. It’s absolutely worth it, especially for kids ages 4 and up. Even my 3-year-old was enchanted by it and for older kids, it becomes a full adventure.

•       End each day at the water park. There is no better way to exhaust happy kids than a couple of hours in the water park before bedtime. They will sleep great and you will too!

How to Camp Inside With the Family Without Being in the Woods?

While I love the idea of camping: the s’mores, the family bonding, the unplugging, what I don’t love are bugs, sleeping on the ground, and no access to a real bathroom.

Great Wolf Lodge is, essentially, camping for families, but make it indoors!

The lodge itself has this warm, woodsy cabin aesthetic that gives you all the cozy, nature-inspired vibes without any of the roughing it. Think timber accents, fireplace-style touches, a communal atmosphere where families from all over gather together. It genuinely feels like a camp, just one with air conditioning, room service, and a water park.

The Great Wolf Lodge water park even has that “outdoor adventure” energy, lazy rivers, splash zones, slides that feel like they belong on a nature trail, without any of the actual outdoor risks. On our first visit with the babies, I loved how enclosed and safe the whole environment felt. No worrying about kids wandering off. No weather concerns. Just all the good parts of a family camp experience, wrapped in the comfort of a resort.

I’m looking forward to letting the kids feel that camp magic while I enjoy my cabana and a cold drink for our End of School Celebration!

What is MagiQuest and is it worth it?

MagiQuest is an interactive, role-playing adventure game that kids play throughout the lodge using magic wands. It’s absolutely worth it, especially for kids ages 4 and up. I’m looking forward to seeing how my older kids enjoy it since they are able to fully immerse themselves in the quests and storylines.

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially if you’re visiting during summer or holiday weekends. Room types, especially themed suites, fill up fast.
