Learning how to build good credit can be a bit of a learning curve and I know firsthand just how intimidating that can be. However, building good credit isn’t as hard as you may think, and no matter your credit situation, good credit is attainable for you. To be completely transparent, I didn’t have much knowledge of credit growing up. Even in adulthood, I had no idea how it worked, what it was made up of, and how important it is. So much so that building good credit wasn’t something that I gave too much thought to until after I graduated college.

As a wife and mom of two young boys and another little bundle of joy on the way, you can imagine the different types of financial goals that my husband and I aspire to achieve. That said, as our family continues to grow, we’re currently looking to purchase our very first home.

The home buying process can be stressful so we want to ensure that we do everything that we can to position ourselves as the optimal home buyers. Here are a few important steps that we are taking to build and maintain good credit.

Pay Bills On Time Every Month

This is probably one of the most simple steps that you can take when trying to build your credit. Payment history makes up a huge chunk of your credit score. That said, staying on top of your expenses and being mindful of due dates are extremely important when it comes to avoiding getting derogatory marks on your credit.

Late payments and other derogatory marks can harm your credit score and cause it to drop significantly so when trying to build good credit, be sure to pay your bills on time every month.

Pay Down Debts

Debts are another significant factor used to calculate your credit score. So whenever possible, paying down your debts can have a positive effect on your credit score. One of the debts that my husband and I personally have been affected by the most has been student loan debt.

So it’s been important for us to make arrangements with our loan providers to try to pay as much of our school debts down as possible before we start the homebuying process. No matter what type of debt you have, it’s important to stay on top of it so that creditors can see that you aren’t high risk when being considered for a loan and/or a line of credit.

Monitor Your Credit Score

While your credit is made up of many different factors, the only way to effectively stay on top of your credit is to actively monitor your credit score for changes and updates. My husband and I frequently check for updates and changes to our credit score and report to ensure that there aren’t any errors.

It is possible for there to be errors on your credit report and depending on what they are, they can have a negative impact on your score and affect your ability to secure different lines of credit such as home and car loans.

Which brings me to my next point…
